Dr. John Hagen

Dr. John Hagen is the current Chief of General Surgery at Humber River Regional Hospital. He is a pioneer in advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques (MIS). He has recently taken the position of Medical Directory of the Bariatric Surgery program.

Dr. Hagen has extensive experience in advanced laparoscopic procedures and is a faculty member of the University of Toronto's MIS fellowship training program.

Dr. Hagen is also one of the lead surgeons for the Cancer Care Ontario mentoring program which is designed to train surgeons around the province in the most current minimally invasive techniques for the treatment of colon cancer.

Dr. Laz Klein

Dr. Laz Klein, MD, MSc, FRCS(C)

Dr. Klein completed the residency program in General Surgery at the University of Toronto. He then went on complete fellowship level training at U of T in advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS).

Since coming to Humber River Regional Program, he converted the existing bariatric program from an "open" program to a completely "laparoscopic" program. Gastric bypass and gastric banding are now performed exclusively laparoscopically by Drs Klein, Hagen, Starr and Huynh.

Dr. Klein is a faculty member of the University of Toronto's MIS fellowshp training program. He as recently received the appointment of Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery. He is primarily interested in the application of minimally invasive techniques to intra-abdominal pathology such gastric and colorectal cancer, benign esophageal disease, adrenal surgery and abdomal wall hernias.

Dr. David Starr

Dr. Huynh is the most recent addition to the MIS group. He completed general surgical training at the University of Toronto and has now completed the U of T MIS fellowship program.
